Information Sheet 1
1. Introduction
The Paulo Freire Center for Study and Research is a private, not-for-profit organization with educational and cultural goals dedicated to keep alive the ideas of Paulo Freire, Pernambucan educator and a reference point for education in Brazil and in the world.
The Paulo Freire International Colloquium is a synthesizing activity of the Center which broadens the horizons of the Center, to create a time and space for presentations of studies, research projects, and reports of educational experiences developed both within and outside of the formal school system.
Between 19 and 22 September, 2005, the Center will host on the campus of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, the 5 th International Paulo Freire Colloquium to continue and broaden the discussions begun in the previous colloquia. This year, the central theme will be: PAULO FREIRE: CHALLENGE TO A MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
2. Thematic lines
2.1 MULTICULTURALITY AND EDUCATION
Description: The principal hypothesis is that cultural diversity makes an inter and intracultural dialogue possible in the contstruction of educational processes involving the popular and underprivedged sectors of national and world society in response to the challenges of post-modernidity/world. That is, construction of a non-schooled education but at the same time school which englobalizes the various implications of cultural diversity, works for dialogue between cultures (interculturality) by means of the pedagogical practice involved. This experience of interculturality contributes to the construction of multiculturality in educational institutions. And multiculturality becomes the fundamental characteristic of a democratic society.
2.2 CULTURE, WORK AND SOCIAL IDENTITY
Description: This theme aims to contribute towards a reflection on the individual aspects of cultures, in an attempt to understand the processes of the production of cultural identities and their relationships with sustainable human economic development. In substance, the theme aims to provoke reflection on the incompleteness of cultures and the need to establish intercultural dialogical relations at the local, regional, national and international levels.
2.3 UNTESTED FEASIBILITY, HOPE AND THE PEDAGOGY OF GREAT CONVERGENCES
Description: This theme attempts to demonstrate that multicultural politico-pedagogical practices and concepts are pregnant with Freirian 'alternativity'. Alternativity which flies in the face of the hegemony of one-way thinking as manifested in the different spheres and dimensions of our reality, as does the viability of the Freirian utopia in the midst of the scale of hegemonic values of the market society.
These broad themes provide a space for reflection, questioning and proposals, such as:
Every-day questions as the political-pedagogical locus of the untested feasibility;
- Identification of pedagogies for a multicultural society;
- Teaching the “untested feasibility”in every-day relations, from a freirian perspective, in the construction of a multicultural society in relationship to:
- Class
- Gender
- Ethnicity
- Generation relationships
- Cosmos/space
- Intra/intersubjective
- The sacred
The three broad themes allow for the development of innumerable threads when they are seen through the perspective of transversality and interdisciplinarity. Extension of these themes could include some of the following: struggle, rights, and social policy; social policy management policies; professional development of teachers and educators; popular education; educational policies; eco-pedagogy and globalization; literacy (alphabetização) and knowing the alphabet (letramento); educational thinking and practice; gender relations in education; autonomy, indignation and hope; multicultural relations in everyday living; ethnic and racial challenges; relations with the sacred; associationalism and social movements; solidarity economy; the world and the neighborhood; the media and new technology. Dialogue, conscientization, and ethics are ideas that will run through all of the works.
